Replacing the faucet in your bathroom can make a world of difference in the appearance and style of your bathroom. The style you choose can accent and emphasize the basic styling of the bathroom and give your entire room a polished, finished appearance. When they are in a unique, striking style they can be the focal point of your design, or subtly blend into the background as a quiet note of luxury and completeness. When choosing there are several things to consider.

Types of Bathroom Faucets

Bathroom sinks are usually predrilled with holes that are meant to accommodate one of three basic faucet sets.

Single faucets combine both hot and cold water control in a single handle. They are usually center mounted and are suitable for use with a sink that is drilled with a single hole. Water flows from one faucet, and temperature is controlled by turning the faucet lever to the left or right. Pushing the faucet handle to the front or back controls the water pressure.

Center set bathroom faucets, also known as mini-widespread faucets, have two separate handles for hot and cold water, and a single faucet. All three parts are combined on one base unit designed to be installed in a 4 inch three-hole center installation.

Widespread faucet sets are a stylish alternative to the less expensive mini-widespread bathroom faucet units. While they are all one piece, when installed they appear to be separate pieces. If you choose a widespread set, it’s important to measure the sink openings carefully, as the faucets vary from 6 inches to 16 inches in width.

The final type is a wall mounted faucet. These bathroom faucets require separate valve and drain installation, and are more expensive than the other alternatives, but the style may be well worth the added expense. They are designed to be used with free standing basins or in situations where the faucet requires more height than a sink mounted faucet can give.

Faucet finishes

The faucet finish that you choose will set a style tone for other bathroom fixtures. There are many choices available in faucet finishes, but the most common are chrome, in polished, matte or brushed finishes. In addition to chrome, you may find nickel (brushed or pearl), colored enamel, brass, silver, gold, platinum, bronze and pewter. Many fashionable faucets combine materials and finishes for a unique look.
